FAQ

Key concepts

What is an RCP?

An RCP (Regroupement pour la Consommation Propre) is the Swiss framework that allows solar electricity produced on-site to be sold and shared within a building or site.

For owners and developers: you create an energy community where the owner (or the co-ownership/cooperative) sells the energy to occupants at a defined tariff, captures the value instead of exporting it to the grid, and increases the property’s attractiveness. An owner-occupant can also share their production with neighbours in a local microgrid.

What is an EMS?

The EMS is the energy management algorithm hosted in the Homsphere Box.
It connects to PV inverters, heat pumps, batteries, EV chargers, meters, and decides what to do and when (charge, discharge, preheat, shift) to maximise local use, reduce peaks, lower costs, and maintain comfort. It uses weather forecasts, usage profiles, and tariffs. It is not just monitoring, it is real-time control.

What is a DSO?

A DSO (Distribution System Operator) is the company that operates the local electricity grid. It is responsible for connections, supply quality and security, network maintenance, meter and data management, and interventions in case of outages.

Self-consumption vs self-sufficiency: what is the difference?

Self-consumption: the share of electricity produced and consumed on-site.

Self-sufficiency: the share of the building’s energy needs covered by local energy.

These are your value indicators. The higher they are, the better the ROI of the solar/battery installation and the stronger the energy independence. Homsphere dashboards track both at building and unit level.

Installation

Is a battery mandatory?

Yes, in the Homsphere approach. Battery and EMS work together to increase self-sufficiency, shave peaks, use solar kWh at the right time and improve ROI. We size the capacity according to your profile (newbuild/retrofit, EV, heat pump, contracted power).

Do the meters need to be changed?

That depends on the site.

Newbuild / recently renovated: installation of smart meters per unit/use, either by the DSO or by the owner.

Existing buildings with old meters: Homsphere installs sub-metering (or replaces meters) to ensure precise netting and reliable monitoring, compliant with RCP and billing.

In all cases, the main DSO meter can remain in place; we design the metering architecture and ensure commissioning.

Which equipment interacts with the Homsphere Box?

PV, heat pumps, batteries, EV chargers, optional home automation, smart meters. Connections are made via standard protocols (e.g. Modbus/TCP, OCPP) for long-term interoperability.

How long does it take to install Homsphere?

From a few days to a few months, depending on project size, complexity and phasing — overall comparable to a PV installation.

Does Homsphere install PV?

No. We specify, oversee and coordinate with certified partner installers (or yours) to ensure clean integration with the EMS.

Usage

Do tenants and owners pay less?

Yes, local energy is more competitive than grid energy.
For owners and developers, this means lower energy charges for residents, a new revenue stream from internal resale, faster amortisation of PV/EMS, and higher property value.

Can I monitor performance on a daily basis?

Yes, you can track performance daily in the app and on the web: production, consumption, savings, and key indicators. Role-based access and exports make reporting easy for owners, operators and residents.

Is the simulator reliable?

The simulator provides a first-level estimate. It draws on your project data, our field experience and our modelling algorithm. It helps frame potential and ROI but does not replace a detailed study of your asset. For a detailed and personalised analysis, request a free Impact Report tailored to your project.

Who handles billing?

Homsphere can manage billing end-to-end. Alternatively, the client can use our platform to handle it themselves. In both cases, the system is flexible and provides clear reporting per unit and per building.

Are my data secure?

Yes, your data are hosted in Europe and protected under GDPR and Swiss LPD, with encryption and role-based access rights. We only collect what is necessary for energy management and billing, and we never resell data.
